What is apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is a type of post secondary education that combines on-the-job training (85%) and classroom instruction (15%) to teach the skills required for a given trade. In Nova Scotia it takes takes approximately 4 years to complete apprenticeship in the sheet metal trade (1 year = approximately 2000 hours).

Apprenticeship Job Description

Primary Purpose:

To assist a Sheet Metal Worker in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of sheet metal equipment, products and structures.

Requirements:

  • 18 years or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Experience is an asset

The Department of Labour and Advanced Education has announced that starting with Level 2 training that they are implementing a completion exam at the end of the block training. Apprentices will need a 70% pass mark to get credit fot the level. This will continue for all levels of training through Level 1 to the interprovincial exam.
