About Us

Our History

Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA) was founded in 1888. Since that time, it has grown to represent over 150,000 men and women, active and retired workers, in areas such as HVAC installation, fabrication, repair, and service; architectural sheet metal; manufacturing, metal roofing, railroad and shipyard work and a range of other industries and occupations.

Local 409 of SMWIA was established in 1945 and currently represents 340 sheet metal workers and roofers from across mainland Nova Scotia.
